Hearty Porridge

What is a great way to start the day? In my eyes, a warm bowl of hearty porridge is just the ticket. Porridge doesn’t have to be a boring bowl of bland oats, everyone is getting into ‘pimping’ their porridge these days. It’s all about the toppings, so get creative!

Ideally you should look for ‘old fashioned’ or ‘steel cut’ oats and please do yourself a favour and avoid the porridge that is already flavoured (these pre-flavoured sachets can contain a lot of unnecessary sugars, you’re much better off flavouring it yourself).

Here’s my usual concoction:

Ingredients

  • 50g (gluten free) oats
  • 250ml Almond milk (I try to get unsweetened if possible but regular is still good too)
  • Dash of cinnamon, for flavour

Method

  1. Add oats to a bowl and mix the cinnamon with the dry oats.
  2. Add your milk and stir.
  3. Microwave for 2 minutes, stir and put another minute on the clock. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t bubble over.

(Of course you can cook it in a pot but I just find the microwave quicker and I know how long to heat it for.)

Sliced banana

Handful of (frozen) blueberries

Handful of (frozen) raspberries

Cinnamon

Honey

 

Ideas for toppings – as I said you can get creative with the toppings so go wild!

Protein powder (stirred in after you heat the oats – yes, I learned this the hard way)

Chia seeds

Grated apple

Nut butter

Mango slices

Peach

Nectarine

Seed mix

Pomegranate seeds

Strawberries

Desiccated coconut

Sultanas

 

Any many, many more possibilities. Remember, breakfast is a very important meal, make it a fun one and one that you look forward to…I know I do!
